Hi Jie,

My parents finally granted my request to have my room renovated and they gave me the freedom to “design” it any way I want. I already have a look in mind and I’m going for an industrial look. I’m stumped though on what kind of flooring to use for this look. Any thoughts?

Joshua from Alabang Hi Joshua,

Congratulations! Maybe you’re on your way to becoming an interior designer! And good choice on the industrial theme. I am guessing that since this is your theme, your walls are going to be in raw concrete and your ceiling would be exposed. If this is the case then I would recommend wood planks for your floor. For one, wood planks are warmer to the feel and would contrast nicely with your concrete walls. Keep them as matte and avoid polish. Just a natural sheen to it will do nicely. Secondly, wood planks are also lighter in weight compared to tiles or stone finishes and this would be a factor especially if your bedroom is located on the second floor. I hope this helps and good luck on your room. I’m sure it will turn out great! Jie

** * HOW DO I VARY MY ROOM LIGHTING? Hi Jie,

My bedroom is my favorite space in the house and I spend most of my time there since I also work from home. Right now, the space is illuminated with only one kind of lighting (fluorescent daylights) and I was wondering if there is a way that I can vary the different kinds of lighting or lighting fixtures in my bedroom to achieve a cozier and warmer ambiance. I hope that you can enlighten me on the matter.

Adelle from Pasig Hi Adelle,

I suggest that you invest in warm lighting. The bedroom should be heavy on the ambiance so you can use different kinds of warm lighting like LED lights, warm white fluorescent lights or even incandescent. Several considerations though, warm lights are warmer in feel and in temperature so the room will have a tendency to feel warmer especially when all the lights are turned on. However, warm lights have a yellowish tinge to them that make them ideal for optimum color rendition and color is a must for creating ambiance. Make sure that your distribute them evenly. You should have enough for general lighting, which mainly consists of ceiling lights. You could also have ambient light, which covers your table lamps with shades and since you work in your room, have a desk lamp handy for task lighting. Be enlightened!
