A fashionista's guide to packing

- uptown/ downtown JOANNE ZAPANTA-ANDRADA

Visiting other places, local or foreign, can be an exciting activity. For many of us, experiencing the sights and flavors of other destinations can be even more fun when done so in style. Uptown/Downtown shares with you some tips on how to achieve a functional holiday wardrobe and how to pack efficiently. 1. Be very conscious of your baggage allowance. This will help you determine how many clothes and accessories to take. 2. If you have a limited amount of space, choose clothes that you can use for day and night. Examples of these would be soft black pants, classic white dress shirts, neutral-toned shift dresses. All of these pieces can be jazzed up by incorporating accessories.

3. Do not underestimate the power of scarves and shawls! They do not just upgrade the look of your ensemble but also can protect you from the elements. 4. If you are not certain if your accommodations would have ironing amenities, then seriously consider piling up on crease-free clothes. Pieces that are made of jersey, spandex, wool, denim and cotton knits can be easily rolled up in suitcases. 5. Place shoes in pouches or cover them in plastic (plastic shower caps work, too!). You may stuff sunglasses, socks or even rolled up underwear inside the shoes to save on space. 6. Seriously consider packing cubes (these can be bought in any department store or at Lazada.com and Zalora.com.ph). They are relatively inexpensive and are incredibly useful for keeping all your traveling items properly segregated. They also help maximize space in your suitcase.

7. To help keep cotton clothes from creasing, roll them over tissue paper. 8. Consider packing a plastic garbage

bag. You can use this to segregate your dirty clothes and undergarments. The bag also helps contain odors in your suitcase when traveling back home. 9. Use pillboxes to contain and protect jewelry such as earrings, bracelets and rings. 10. Pack an extra change of clothes in your hand-carry. You never know when you will experience extended delays or coffee accidents during your trip. 11. Mint tins make excellent protectiveand mini-flash containers drives. for earphones

12. Ziplocs are a godsend! They work wonders as makeshift packing cubes and are disposable.

13. A good product to pack in your

hand-carry is scented lip balm. It is perfect for cleaning up makeup smears on your face, cheeks and eyelids. It also softens lips. The best part: smear a bit of it under your nose when you have to enter a smelly bathroom! The scent will help mask bad odors.

14. Make a packing list to make sure that you do not forget any item. 15. Always photocopy important pages from your passport. Place them in your hand-carry and check-in luggage. This way, if you lose your passport, you would have some proof of the existence of your travel documents.

16. Bring a portable hair iron/ straightener. It not only helps keep your hair stylish, it also doubles as a small iron, ideal for pressing collars and small creases. 17. When packing, prioritize large and solid objects.
