In chess, Henry Lopez, Sander Severino and Felix Aguilera pocketed the rapid team gold for the physically impaired by scoring 9.5 points, a full point ahead of the Indonesian team of Maksum Firdaus, Azhar Panjaitan and Sutikno.

Firdaus, who beat Aguilera, and Lopez, who turned back Vietnamese Nguyen Anh Tuan, ended up tied for first in the individual race with 5.5 points apiece but the former took the gold with a better tiebreak of 18.5 points as against the latter’s 18.

Severino, the individual and team standard double-gold medal winner who finished with four points, settled for the bronze with four points.

Chess thus ended up with four golds, two short of the team’s sixgold haul in Singapore.

The three golds hiked the Phl’s total to 19, which eclipsed the 16gold harvest in the last edition of the biennial meet.
