National Artist Jose Joya’s powerful 1965 work, “Cascade,” led the record-breaking sale prices of the Important Philippine Art category selling for an astounding P22,192,000 (inclusive of buyer’s premium and VAT) at Salcedo Auctions, setting a new world auction record for the artist, based on its size.

Also setting world auction records were the works by the late Mauro Malang Santos and Jose John Santos III. Malang’s 1974 “Barrio Scene” tableau went for P8,176,000, while Santos’ introspect­ive “One Way” sold at an impressive P15,184,000, far outstrippi­ng its pre-sale high estimate of P3,800,000. National Artist Ang Kuikok’s 1990 “Harvest” sold for P17,520,000, National Artist BenCab’s 1998 “Long-Haired Woman” achieved P16,352,000, and Arturo Luz’s mid-’60s “Still Life” sold for P12,848,000.

The Fine Jewelry & Timepieces auction by Paolo Martel attracted bidders from Hong Kong, Italy, Russia, and the US, among others, with an impressive line up of vintage Rolex watches never before seen in the Philippine market. The star of the show was a reference 6263 Rolex Daytona “Paul Newman” with a Panda dial, which sold for P22,192,000, the highest price for a watch sold at auction in the Philippine­s. The extremely rare and collectibl­e reference 5514 Rolex Submariner Comex sold for P6,424,000 and the reference 5512 Submariner Square Crown Guard hammered at P7,008,000, of which only less than a hundred were produced. New records were also achieved for a Rolex 1665 “double red” Sea-Dweller and a Rolex GMT Pepsi 1675 which sold for P3,504,000 and P1,868,800 respective­ly.

On the jewelry side, a show-stopping D color 5.56 carat diamond ring found a new home when it hammered at P11,680,000. A beautiful diamond and black South Sea pearl bib necklace was also sold at P2,336,000.

The weekend was capped with the Rare Automobile­s sale, which saw a 1964 two-tone black over burgundy Volkswagen Beetle selling for P876,000.

The Well-Appointed Life auctions is copresente­d by The Peninsula Manila and Santos Knight Frank, with major partners Globe Platinum, Lexus, Singapore Airlines, and premium audio partner Bowers and Wilkins.
