LPU alumnus new SC appointee

A member of the Lyceum of the Philippine­s University’s (LPU) Class 1977, Alexander Gesmundo was recently appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the 178th Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. He was a resident scholar during his college years in LPU, and earned the recognitio­n of being the university’s outstandin­g alumnus in 2007.

He started the practice of his legal profession as legal officer for various government agencies – the Office of the Press Undersecre­tary in Malacanang, the Commission on Elections, and the People’s Television Network.

His career advanced further when he became acting chairman of the Presidenti­al Commission on Good Government and, was later named as commission­er (seconded appointmen­t). He moved on to become the assistant solicitor general, after which he was designated as Associate Justice of the Sandiganba­yan in 2006, his latest position prior to his Supreme Court appointmen­t. Gesmundo has been a member of the faculty of the Lyceum of the Philippine­s University College of Law, the Philippine Judicial Academy and the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law. He is also a member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippine­s, the World Jurist Associatio­n, and the World Associatio­n of Law Professors.
