LPU alumnus new SC appointee
A member of the Lyceum of the Philippines University’s (LPU) Class 1977, Alexander Gesmundo was recently appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte as the 178th Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. He was a resident scholar during his college years in LPU, and earned the recognition of being the university’s outstanding alumnus in 2007.
He started the practice of his legal profession as legal officer for various government agencies – the Office of the Press Undersecretary in Malacanang, the Commission on Elections, and the People’s Television Network.
His career advanced further when he became acting chairman of the Presidential Commission on Good Government and, was later named as commissioner (seconded appointment). He moved on to become the assistant solicitor general, after which he was designated as Associate Justice of the Sandiganbayan in 2006, his latest position prior to his Supreme Court appointment. Gesmundo has been a member of the faculty of the Lyceum of the Philippines University College of Law, the Philippine Judicial Academy and the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law. He is also a member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, the World Jurist Association, and the World Association of Law Professors.
