De Los Santos ensures Vertical Run Manila safety
For the second year in a row, De Los Santos Medical Center (DLSMC) served as the official medical partner of the Kerry Sports Manila Vertical Run recently. Around 700 runners from 24 countries – up from more than 500 participants the previous year – attempted to conquer the 59-, 37- and 20-floor courses of the skyscraper racing event.
Again held at Shangri-La at the Fort, Manila, it was the fifth race in the 2017 Vertical World Circuit calendar following the ones held in Dubai, London, Paris and New York.
“Vertical running is a very effective, high-impact cardiovascular workout,” explained Gloria Arroyo-Coronel, head of De Los Santos Med’s Rehabilitation Medicine and Sports Center.
“As with any cardio exercise, proper hydration and pre-workout routines like warm-up and stretching are essential to help prevent injury,” Coronel said.
While a number of the participants experienced heat exhaustion, cramps and minor sprains, they were immediately treated by the hospital’s medical team. No major injuries were recorded during the indoor race.
“With the increase in the number of participants, the need for medical assistance became more invaluable than before. We are yet again thankful for De Los Santos Med’s active involvement in ensuring the safety and well-being of our runners during the Philippines’ tallest stair-climbing race,” David Shin of Sporting Republic, the event’s organizers said.
