Address terrorism, Rody urges Asean
President Duterte stressed the importance of addressing terrorism, violent extremism and other security concerns during yesterday’s opening remarks for the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Manila.
Apologizing for setting the tone of his speech on terrorism
and violent extremism, Duterte said these issues, as well as piracy and armed robbery on the high seas, would “endanger the peace, stability and security of our region because these threats know no boundaries.”
The President welcomed the leaders of ASEAN nations and dialogue partners, saying he expects the meetings to present an “excellent opportunity to engage in meaningful discussion on matters of regional and international importance.”
Apart from security issues, he announced that member-states have come to an agreement on protecting and promoting the rights of migrant workers.
“I will be joining other ASEAN leaders tomorrow in signing this landmark document that will strengthen social protection, access to justice, humane and fair treatment,” Duterte said.
“Other deliverables that will see fruition include those concerning health, women and the youth, terrorism, radicalization and violent extremism, trafficking, poverty alleviation, food security, coastal and marine environment and the pursuit of innovation for our economies, among others,” the President added.
He thanked ASEAN countries and dialogue partners for helping the communities affected by the attack on Marawi City by the Islamic State-inspired Maute and Abu Sayyaf terrorist groups.
“Our ASEAN brothers provided support by sending relief items for the benefit of the internally displaced persons while others provided valuable assistance and bolstered our military campaign,” Duterte pointed out.
During the plenary session, he noted the efforts and work of sectorial bodies and organs to fully and effectively implement the ASEAN Political Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprints for 2025.
“Today, we continue our discussions on how to further consolidate our efforts and our shared aspirations toward an ASEAN Community that is truly rulesbased, people-oriented and peoplecentered,” the Chief Executive added.
“Moving forward to ensure the ASEAN’s viability, a new set of three Cs – community, centrality and connectivity – will define the work and effort needed to ensure the success of our community-building process and our interaction with external partners,” he said.
Duterte also mentioned how the “menace of the illegal drug trade continues to endanger the very fabric of our societies.”
