Blue Eaglets rip Bullpups, near sweep

Ateneo High School turned the battle of the unbeaten giants with National U into a one-sided affair and romped off with a 6449 rout to go 6-0 in the UAAP Season 80 juniors’ basketball tourney yesterday at Filoil Flying V Center.

SJ Belangel dished out 14 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and four steals while Dave Ildefonso had a doubledouble of 12 markers and 12 caroms and towering Kai Sotto had 12 rebounds and eight blocks as the Eaglets moved one win closer to sweeping the first round.

With Belangel at the tip, the Eaglets broke the game apart with a 19-5 exchange in the first quarter, from which the erstwhile unbeaten Bullpups couldn’t recover. The Eaglets led by as many as 23 in the second canto and had the solution when NU threatened to within 10 in the middle of the fourth.

Terrence Portea paced the Bullpups (5-1) with 23.

In the other games, Santo Tomas got back on track with an 83-72 disposal of De La SalleZobel while defending champion Far Eastern-Diliman snapped a three-game skid with a 90-63 demolition of University of the Philippines Integrated School. CJ Cansino came through 23 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, and two steals to power the Tiger Cubs to their fourth win in six starts for third place.

LJ Gonzales, meanwhile, took the cudgels for the Baby Tams with 15 points, seven boards, five assists and four steals.
