After feasting, Pinoys told to fast

- By SHEILA CRISOSTOMO

After feasting on sumptuous meals during the holidays, Filipinos should fast to help their bodies “rest and recuperate” from their “massive intake,” the Department of Health (DOH) said yesterday.

DOH Undersecretary Gerardo Bayugo said it is best for those who went on bingeeating during the Yuletide season to practice fasting even temporarily.

“Many people are actually doing it now. They go on fasting to give the body its much-needed break. Once a week may be a good start… Others do some exercising,” he added.

But Bayugo reminded those who may have preexisting conditions to consult their doctors first.

“This is not simply going on a diet. It is giving your body, especially your digestive system, the time to rest and recuperate from the massive intake it experienced,” he explained.

Filipinos traditionally celebrate Christmas and New Year with food high in sugar and cholesterol like lechon, ham, cakes, sweet desserts, as well as alcoholic and sweet beverages. Parties usually end late at night.

Bayugo said while there is no statistical data, doctors reported an increase in consultation for hypertension, diabetes and other conditions related to the holidays.

“Many are saying, especially hospitals and private practitioners, that there are usually higher number of consultations, as well as cases of stroke, during the holiday season,” he said.
