New Balance backs TRAP

- Olmin Leyba

The training program of the national triathlon developmental pool received a big boost as the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) and New Balance Philippines partnered for the youngsters’ cause.

As it launched the “Run On Manila + Power Run 2018” yesterday, the global brand announced its support to TRAP’s developmental bets and made them beneficiaries of the upcoming race slated Feb. 11 at McKinley West in BGC.

“Elite triathletes like Nikko (Huelgas) and Kim (Mangrobang) have the opportunity to train abroad but there’s a lot of developing athletes who need help from private companies in the development of their skills in triathlon,” said New Balance Philippines president Anton Gonzalez.

According to him, the company is committed to provide product support for training and training needs and help “in which ever way we can help” the upstarts whom he hopes will carry the fight in the Asian Games and probably the Olympics someday.

“Judging from what I hear, they have a good program for young athletes to develop into real contenders at the regional level,” said Gonzalez, whose company has been supporting TRAP’s Subic races for many years already.

“We really appreciate the efforts of Anton and New Balance management to help our up-andcoming triathletes. We have a wide pool of developmental athletes, some of whom come from as far as Talisay, Bukidnon, Davao, Tagum, and Baler,” said TRAP secretary general Tom Carrasco.

Members of the TRAP pool are expected to take part in the Run On Manila + Power Run 2018, which will actually combine New Balance’s race series featuring the 5K+1K for beginners and the 8K, 16K, and signature 25K distance.
