SSC overpowers Lyceum in NC volley

- By JOEY VILLAR

San Sebastian went to Nikka Dalisay when skipper Joyce Sta. Maria struggled as it overpowered Lyceum of the Phl U, 2523, 25-6, 25-14, yesterday to boost its Final Four campaign in the 93rd NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

Dalisay stepped up big with a match-best 16 hits, 12 of which came from kills and four on service aces, while Sta. Rita grappled to rediscover her old form and finished with just 10 after coming into the duel averaging 22 in their last two outings.

“This is what’s good with this team, even though we’re only few, most of the players here are veterans and anyone can step up,” said San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb.

It was the Lady Stags’ fourth straight victory and fifth overall against two defeats, pushing them closer to the Final Four.

San Sebastian, however, will have to earn its slot as its last two foes will be against the league’s top two teams – league-leading Arellano U (7-0) and No. 2 San Beda (6-1).

Losing both those games could cost SSC a spot in the Final Four as Perpetual Help (4-2), Jose Rizal (3-3) and St. Benilde (3-3) are all hot on its tracks.

“If we can beat one of the two, we’ll have a chance,” said Gorayeb, whose charges clash with San Beda on Tuesday and AU on Thursday. LPU fell to 1-6.
