Tough Mudder makes Phl debut

- By OLMIN LEYBA

Filipinos seeking to test their strength, stamina and over-all fitness will have a new event to look forward to as Tough Mudder, one of the top obstacle course events in the world, is penciled for its Philippine debut in July and November.

Taking the cue from events held in Mexico, Bali, Ireland, United Arab Emirates, and Ausrtralia, the inaugural Tough Mudder Philippines will put participants through 5K and 8K of mud run plus more than 20 obstacles along the way.

The arrival of Tough Mudder in the country was made possible by the new partnership between Tough Mudder, Inc. and Proactive Sports Management, which held their press launch Saturday at Shangri-La The Fort.

“This is the first time that Tough Mudder will be in the Philippines and it’s not just about being tough, it’s also about teamwork and determination,” said Proactive COO Justine Cordero, who joined Proactive Sports president Julius Em, Proactive’s Mike Yung, Tough Mudder operations manager Nathan Bassett, and Pilipinas Obstacle Sports Federation president Alberto Agra in the launch.

Organizers and officials reiterated that Tough Mudder is not a competition or a race but rather a challenge to participants to conquer the odds and finish the course. Along with the thrills, they said camaraderie and friendship are forged as virtual strangers help one another out in hurdling the obstacles.

“Tough Mudder is closer to Filipino values in terms of what we call bayanihan. In the Philippine setting, we carry a shack towards one direction, helping one another,” said Agra.

Em said they expect 5,000 participants for the maiden event in July, which will feature the 5K and 8K distances.

Expect Tough Mudders’ signature obstacles to make it tougher.

“You get the full Tough Mudder experience in the Philippines. There’s a little bit of difference in obstacles (from other events) but you’re getting the real deal here,” said Bassett.
