MCIA T2 on track for June opening

- By LOUELLA DESIDERIO

The second terminal of the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) is on track to open in June.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said MCIA Terminal 2 is now 89 percent complete.

“The DOTr, through its Public Private Partnership (PPP) with Megawide GMR, targets to open the new terminal for commercial operations in June,” the agency said.

Once completed, the new world-class passenger terminal building in MCIA will have a capacity of about 13 million passengers annually, from 4.5 million.

The consortium of Megawide Construction Corp. and GMR Infrastructure Ltd. of India bagged the MCIA project under the PPP program during the previ- ous administration.

It assumed operations of the MCIA in November 2014.

Aside from the MCIA new passenger terminal, the consortium also bagged the construction contract for the Clark International Airport’s new terminal building.

When completed, the new terminal would bring Clark airport’s total capacity to 12 million passengers per year from the current four million.

The project is the first under the Duterte administration’s Build Build Build program to use the hybrid model.

Using a hybrid model means the government will build the infrastructure using its own funds.

After building the infrastructure, the government will then bid out the operations and maintenance to the private sector.
