Blaze Spikers blast undermanned Giga Hitters
Games tomorrow 2 p.m. – Foton vs Cocolife 4 p.m. – F2 Logistics vs Petron
Petron clipped Cuban power-hitter Gyzelle Silva and fashioned out a 2512, 25-14, 25-17 victory yesterday to remain unbeaten in the Chooks to GoPhilippine Superliga Grand Prix at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
American Lindsay Stalzer unloaded 14 points, including 11 attack points while helping slow down Silva with superb blocking as the Blaze Spikers booked their third straight win to stay at the helm.
“We came into the game with a plan of stopping or slowing down Silva and we were quite successful,” said Stalzer. “But obviously, she got a lot of power behind her. You can see from the way balls are flinging from all over the place, she’s hard to stop.”
After a monster 33-point performance in her losing debut against Cocolife last Tuesday, Silva settled for a 22-hit game, no thanks to a rock solid, Stalzer-led Petron net defense.
Silva continued to play solo as Smart’s other import, Serbian Sanja Trivunovic, has yet to arrive.
The Giga Hitters slipped to their second loss in a row.
The victory, meanwhile, augured well for Petron, which also downed Sta. Lucia Realty, 25-21, 18-25, 25-17, 25-20, on Feb. 17 and Cignal, 25-17, 8-25, 25-20, 25-17, which will be facing defending champion F2 Logistics tomorrow.
