Defenders sweep Kamao, capture UNTV Cup crown

Anton stuns rivals in big Autocross debut

-

Castrol-Yokohama champion driver Inigo Anton marked Autocross racing debut in style, winning the Novice Championship at Meycauayan Commercial Complex recently.

The 13-year-old Anton, the youngest and current National FWD Slalom Racing champion, blasted through the 1.8 kilometer stage in 57.01 seconds using the 190hp Mark Young-Mohspeed prepared Honda EF on Neova AD08 tires. He beat Ryan Ablang (1:00.99) and Brian Ngo (1:01.13) for the Novice best time of the day.

Anton also turned in the fourth fastest time overall (55.83 seconds) in the all-Honda class, which drew over 100 seasoned drivers.

“Inigo really worked hard for this and practiced throughout the Christmas break to be in top form. We were surprised with the top-caliber skills he Carlos and Inigo Anton showed since we didn’t expect him to run at such a fast pace in his Autocross debut,” said Inigo’s father and 2009 Philippine Autocross winner Carlos Anton.

Senate, which failed to nail a single win last year, won it all this time, blasting Malacañang-Philippine Sports Commission, 84-64, in Game Two of the finals to complete a sweep of the UNTV Cup crown at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Monday night.

Sen. Sonny Angara credited the team’s turnaround from a once whipping squad to a champion team to their cohesion and teamwork honed throughout the year under coach Mike Fermin.

“We played as a team and I think that was the key,” said Angara, who co-skippered the squad with fellow Sen. Joel Villanueva.

Senate, led by former Chiang Kai Shek player Gary Sevilla, James Mangaran and ex-pro Jeff Sanders, also ripped the fancied Kamao side, 77-62, in the opener of their best-of-three playoff last week.
