‘Tri-Angles’at Galerie Roberto

- James Dayrit

Eminent critic Alice Guillermo wrote loftily of the art of sculpture, thus: “Gods and men, animals and plants, and sundry creatures of the earth, water and air – inhabiting the real world or the world of myth and imagination – find artistic form in sculpture…Medium itself is brought to the fore in its full texture materiality, its tactile immediacy, its physical allure…” While the American artist Ad Reinhardt cheekily remarked: “Sculptures are something you bump into when you back up to look at a painting.”

Currently at the Galerie Roberto, there will be no paintings to back up from, as it presents an ongoing, all-sculpture show, the annually held “Tri-Angles.”

Participating sculptors are: Ral Arrogante, Moreen Austria, Mike Baldemor, Malyn Bonayog, Arnel Borja, Matthius Bragais, Richard Buxani, Ferdinand Cacnio, Glenn Cagandahan, Jonathan Dangue, James Dayrit, Angel Del Castillo, Arnel Garcia, Harold Gomez, Toym Imao, Kish Javier, Niccolo Jose, Michelle Lua, Marlon Lucenara, Ram Mallari, Adrian Jay Manuel, Myra Molina, Jerry Morada, Jaime Nepomuceno, Fhiex Orozco, Lucky Salayog, Jinggoy Salcedo, Jun Vicaldo, Jik Villanueva, and Nicholas Villanueva.

Exploring a variety of materials — from wood and stone to glass and metal, iron, brass, and bronze — these young Filipino sculptors express an intimate relationship with their medium while discovering the possibilities of the three-dimensional realm, through carving, modeling, casting, and construction. “Tri-Angles” runs until April 4. Galerie Roberto is located at Unit 4, Molito Lifestyle Extension, Bldg. 7, Madrigal Ave. cor. Commerce Ave., Alabang, Muntinlupa City.
