The Philippine National Police (PNP) has beefed up its security measures for the Holy Week and summer vacation, particularly in tourist spots where suspected drug traffickers proliferate.

PNP chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa ordered all drug enforcement units to monitor activities not only at tourist destinations but also in restaurants and bars.

Dela Rosa said the police received reports that drug dealers have been frequenting restaurants and bars in Metro Manila, particularly at Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig City.

He said one drug trafficker, whom he did not identify, has been selling ecstasy and other party drugs at establishments at the BGC.

“I already know who you are. We will capture you eventually,” said Dela Rosa.

The PNP chief inspected yesterday the Araneta Center bus terminal in Quezon City ahead of the Holy Week break, where he asked commuters about their situation. He also reminded drivers to stay alert to prevent road accidents.

The inspection is in line with the PNP’s security plan for the summer dubbed “Ligtas SUMVAC 2018,” which was launched yesterday.

“We advised passengers and especially the drivers who are the ones at the steering wheel to always stay safe,” said Dela Rosa.

Dela Rosa said said they are on full alert status, which means all officers and personnel of the 180,000-strong PNP are ready for deployment.

While they have not monitored any threat from terrorist groups, Dela Rosa reminded the public to always be on alert and immediately report suspicious-looking persons on the streets.

“We are advising the public not to relax and let us all be vigilant with our surroundings,” said Dela Rosa.

At least 5,000 policemen would be deployed in Central Luzon to secure public places and communities during the summer holidays.

Chief Supt. Amador Corpus, Central Luzon police director, said LIGTAS SUMVAC 2018 was launched to enforce security measures.

“I ordered all provincial/ city directors to ensure the safe and secure travel of motorists and commuters this coming Lenten season and summer vacation,” Corpus said.

Corpus said police presence will be intensified through increased foot/mobile patrols and established police assistance centers.
