Mighty Beermen still the faves vs Hotshots

Though they split their first two games, San Miguel Beer remains the heavy favorite over Magnolia as they take a breather before facing off again in an Easter showdown in Game Three of their PBA Philippine Cup best-of-seven title series at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Some coaches feel San Miguel would benefit more from the six-day break, adding to its clear advantage in roster power and championship experience.

“If they get Game Three, I wouldn’t be surprised if they go on to sweep the next two games,” said Phoenix coach Louie Alas.

“The break favors San Miguel as they play a short rotation. Magnolia wants to play continuously with its pressure defense. With that, they might be able to wear down June Mar (Fajardo) and his teammates,” Alas pointed out.

The Phoenix coach, however, is not ruling out a reversal.

“If Magnolia wins Game Three, they can’t be taken lightly anymore. Going with them is their great determination. It’s very evident they want to win badly,” Alas said.

Meanwhile, NLEX coach Yeng Guiao feels the break would hardly make a difference.

“San Miguel Beer remains the favorite. The only thing that can impact the series now would be injuries,” said Guiao.

Based on what he saw in the first two games, Guiao foresees a long series with San Miguel prevailing.

“I feel the series would be closer than I thought. It could be SMB in seven games,” the NLEX bench chieftain said.

The two teams fight for the 2-1 series lead after the Hotshots stole Game One at 105-103 then the Beermen came back strong and pound out a 92-77 victory.

The Beermen have been the dominant side thus far.

“They’re showing their championship experience. They’re hardly rattled. It seems running the game is second nature to them,” said Alas.

San Miguel is chasing a fourth straight Philippine Cup crown while Magnolia is looking to nail a first title in 10 conferences.
