Rise of the Phoenix in PeopleAsia

-

• PeopleAsia trains the spotlight on new names to watch out for, rising stars in the fields of business, fashion, arts and more.

Gracing the magazine’s AprilMay 2018 cover are businessman Dennis Uy and his wife Cherylyn. This power couple from Davao has risen to national

prominence with growing business interests in petroleum (Phoenix Petroleum), shipping and logistics (2G0 and Chelsea logistics), real estate (Udevco), education (Enderun Colleges) and convenience stores (Family Mart).

More than their success, though, Dennis and Che insist that marital bliss is their ultimate treasure. In the interview with The STAR reporter Iris Gonzales, the business tycoon shares his ultimate secret to happiness: “Always say ‘yes’ to your wife!”

Cherylyn, on the other hand, shares that their strength as a couple lies in their ability to constantly communicate and support each other. “We don’t control each other. We support each other’s goals, hobbies, likes and dislikes,” she says.

Power couples aside, the magazine also highlights the value of family with sons and daughters who make their parents – and siblings – proud.

Leading the lineup is American diplomat, lawyer and editor Caroline Kennedy. The daughter of the late US President John F. Kennedy recently visited Manila to honor fallen soldiers of World War II.

Patty Ang, the daughter of business magnate Felix Ang, steps out of her father’s shadow with a blooming fashion business. She also juggles her time as a single mother to daughter Alexa and as the bride-to-be of Miguel Almeda.

Also conquering the world of fashion is designer Michael Leyva, brother of the late fashion designer Brian Leyva, who was held at gunpoint leading to his untimely demise. To this day, Michael brings the flowers he receives from fashion shows to his brother’s grave, because he was his biggest “idol.”

Another up-and-comer in this issue is Paulina Luz Sotto, a rising star in the art world. The granddaughter of National Artist for Visual Arts Arturo Luz talks about her passions as an artist and how her lolo (unwittingly) inspired her to take the paintbrush.

Florist and events designer Dave Sandoval is also featured in the magazine, as he talks about the many events he has made more special by doing what he does best – adding flowers!

Last but definitely not the least, Swedish Ambassador Harald Fries also graces the pages, as he talks about reopening the Embassy of Sweden in Manila after an almost 10-year hiatus. An avid driver who has driven from the US to Canada for eight straight weeks, the ambassador also talks about Swedish carmaker Volvo, Filipino food and more!
