Six women join forces to denounce catcalling

-

San Mig Light gathered a gaggle of women recently who have been tireless in fighting for gender equality for a mahaba-habang usapan on a daily phenomenon that , embarrassingly, most women still experience to this day — catcalling.

Six women — Mich Dulce, designer; Naomi Fontanos, educator; Samantha Lee, filmmaker; Wiji Lacsamana, tattoo artist and mother; Adriana Griner, college student; and Noelle Capili, activist — were invited to participate in the event, which was streamed live on San Mig Light’s Facebook page. Different faces, different fields, but all with the same inextinguishable flame that burns for a society where finally, women would be treated equally as men.

The light yet meaningful conversation flowed from their personal accounts when they became victims of catcalling, to how does it affects women and why it’s imperative for everyone to talk about it, to suggestions on how to deal with catcalling both short-term (in the moment) and long-term (policies on a national level and on an LGU scale).

This mahaba-habang usapan, the first in a year-long series, aims to rally people to talk about equality in general, and gender equality in particular. Netizens who lauded this first installment can look forward to more conversations about Women Empowerment, Breaking Gender Stereotypes, and Gender Inclusivity to name a few.
