The Mandala Art Festival explores the theme ‘Lupang Pamana’
The 7th Mandala Art Festival starts today until May 13 in Pulilan, Bulacan. The festival has been spearheaded by the local arts and culture organization Jefarca Arts and Historical Society Inc. since its inception in 2012. For this year, the Municipality of Pulilan is funding the festival and embracing it fully together with Jefarca as part of its tourism program billed as Celebrate Pulilan Power under the leadership of the current Mayor Maritz Ochoa-Montejo.
The Mandala Festival is an annual gathering of artists and cultural workers celebrating the artistic skills and traditions of Central Luzon. A fundraising exhibition “LuPamana” for the publication of a book with the same title about Pulilan’s arts and culture will mark the opening of the festival at SM Center Pulilan. The artist talks slated today will focus on public art and the practices of the invited guest speakers Luis “Junyee” Yee, Jr. for installation art, Rai Cruz for the public mural, and EXLD for the graffiti and street art.
Two major public artworks will be unveiled also on May 9, Wednesday. The first one is the 1913 Posong Malaki Monument, a significant landmark in the town that influenced the way of life and tradition of Pulilenyos. The second one is the installation art “Refuge” by noted conceptual artist Allison Wong David.
The public art mural production program (Kalye Art) that was started last year will continue with the carabao as the same theme. Students from various schools in Pulilan, local artists, artists from the Central Luzon region, and some street art collectives from Metro Manila (Rai Cruz with DKS, Ang Gerilya, Pilipinas Street Plan) are invited to share their talent and create public art murals around the town from May 11 to 13.
