Black Panther, Stranger Things lead MTV Movie & TV Awards nominees

- BABY A. GIL

Black Panther, the movie that launched Chadwick Boseman to Marvel Superhero immortality, and Stranger Things, the creepy show about kids coping with an eerie environment, topped the list of nominees at the MTV Movie and TV Awards. Nominations in 14 categories were revealed last week with more to follow these coming days.

To find out who will win and to watch the awards night, check into the MTV channel on June 18 for the live telecast from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica California.

Black Panther which has became one of the biggest-grossing films of all time got seven nominations, including the much sought-after Best Movie and the Best Performance in a Movie for the Black Panther himself, Boseman. Meanwhile, Stranger Things bested all other shows with six nods, including Best Show and Best Performance in a Show, for its talented fast growing-up star Millie Bobby Brown.

Now the MTV Movie and TV Award is no Oscar or Emmy or even a Golden Globe but it is tops if you want to find out what is hip and what kids are watching or talking about. Some people who may see these nominations as bits of nonsense. These are pieces that make up today’s pop culture. Besides, the MTV Movie and TV Awards has this daring, who cares, thumb-in-the-nose attitude. You can bet that what other award-givers will not dare do, MTV will.

Can you imagine honoring a Most Frightened Performance? Well, MTV will, which only goes to show that horror flicks where kids can get really frightened are important this season. There are more and these things are among the reasons why I actually look forward to the nominations and why I always watch the show.

Come to think of it though, because MTV gives its awards ahead of all others, it has the capacity to be able to set the trend or be the preview vehicle for other awards. The film Get Out, an MTV favorite, made it to some nominations at the Academy Awards. Do you think the same thing will happen to Black Panther? Does being nominated or will winning an MTV give Black Panther, Oscar quality? We will soon find out.
