Magnitude 5.7 quake jolts VisMin

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook parts of the Visayas and Mindanao on Thursday night, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanolog­y and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenter of the quake, which occurred at about 7:56 p.m., was located nine kilometers southwest of Libjo, Surigao del Norte.

The quake was felt at Intensity 5, which is considered strong, in Libjo, San Jose, Basilisa, Tubajon, Loreto, Cagdianao and Dinagat on Dinagat islands; Guiuan, Mercedes and Salcedo in Eastern Samar and Surigao City.

It was felt at Intensity 4 or moderately strong in Carrascal and Cantilan, Surigao del Sur; Lawaan, Giporlos, General Macarthur, Llorente, Maydolong and San Julian in Eastern Samar; Butuan City; San Francisco, San Juan, Liloan and Hinunangan, Southern Leyte; Tolosa, Leyte; Placer, Del Carmen and Mainit, Surigao del Norte; and Rosario, Agusan del Sur.

The quake was felt at Intensity 3 in Baybay City, Dulag, Palo and Pastrana, Leyte; Borongan and Dolores, Eastern Samar; Gingoog, Misamis Oriental; Maasin and Sogod, Southern Leyte; Tacloban City; San Miguel, Surigao del Sur; Iligan City, and Burgos, Surigao del Norte.

It was also felt at Intensity 2 in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur; Cagayan de Oro City; Oras, Eastern Samar; Camiguin island and Intensity 1 in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental and Bislig City.

Phivolcs warned the public of possible aftershock­s.
