Archers, Blazers stay unscathed

-

De La Salle University unveiled its latest crop of recruits and an unforgiving defense in trouncing Emilio Aguinaldo College, 83-51, to move into a tie for the lead with Ateneo at the 12th Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup Friday at the Filoil Flying V Center.

The DLSU defense forced a series of turnovers which they translated into a 20-0 run, starring Taane Samuel and Mark Dyke to begin the third period, 54-29, and the Generals never recovered despite breaking their silence at the 3:16 mark with a Jerome Garcia triple.

The win moved Green Archers into a tie for the lead at 4-0 with idle archrival Ateneo.

In the other game, St. Benilde pounced on an undermanned Lyceum side and fashioned out a 92-68 rout to notch its second straight victory.

Slotman Clement Leutcheu dished out a double-double job of 19 points and 15 rebounds while Yankee Haruna scored 14 markers and guard Unique Naboa and gunner Carlo Young chipped in 11 markers apiece for the Blazers, who seized control early, 41-26, and led by as many as 28 points (88-66). Naboa added four assists and two steals. Starters CJ Perez and Jesper Ayaay suited up for the Pirates, who are coming a triumphant campaign in the PBA D-League Aspirants’ Cup. But fellow mainstays Mike Nzeusseu and twins Jaycee and Jayvee Marcelino failed to see action.

While admitting that they played against an incomplete side, St. Benilde coach TY Tang said he was happy with his wards’ game.

The Blazers produced a 57 percent field goal accuracy although they groped for form at the line with a woeful 54 percent clip. CSB also beat Lyceum off the boards, 53-39.

Ayaay led Lyceum with 14 points while Ralph Tansingco added 12 markers.

In the seniors match, Allyn Bulanadi took charge in the clutch as San Sebastian turned back UST, 78-71.

In the lone high school match, the FEUFERN Baby Tamaraws walloped the Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 84-60, with Royce Alforque finishing with 17 points.
