National conference on teaching of literature set
De La Salle University (DLSU) literature department will hold “Writing the Classroom 2: National Conference on the Teaching of Literature and the Humanities” on May 17-19 at the Yuchengco Hall seminar rooms 407-409, DLSU, Taft Avenue, Manila. This is open to teachers of literature especially those teaching in the senior high school and college.
The three-day conference will have plenary lectures and master classes on teaching literature such as teaching creative writing, teaching creative nonfiction, teaching 21st century literature, teaching contemporary art from the regions, and teaching popular culture. It will feature a special forum on literary biography.
Dr. Jose Y. Dalisay will deliver the keynote address. The panel forum will feature Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, Susan Lara, and John Iremil Teodoro, and will be moderated by Ronald Baytan.
Dalisay is professor of literature and creative writing at the University of the Philippines Diliman where he also serves as the vice president for public affairs. He has 30 books of stories, plays, and essays. His countless literary distinctions include the National Book Award from the Manila Critics Circle and the National Book Development Board, the Hall of Fame-Don Carlos Palanca Awards in five genres, Cultural Center of the Philippines Awards for playwriting, FAMAS, Urian, Star and Catholic Film Awards for screenplays.
Hidalgo is director of the University of Santo Tomas Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies, and professor emeritus of English and comparative literature at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. She has authored 14 nonfiction collections.
Lara has garnered the National Book Award for Fiction for “Letting Go and Other Stories.” She served as director of the Silliman National Writers Workshop (2013-2014).
Teodoro has won the National Book Award for Creative Nonfiction for his essay collection “Pagmumuni-muni at Pagtatalak ng Sirenang Nagpapanggap na Prinsesa.” He is the graduate studies coordinator of DLSU literature department.
Recognized by the Commission on Higher Education as a Center of Development, the DLSU literature department is home to writers and scholars respected and published in the Philippines and abroad.
