It was a fashion heat wave for teens and kids at Shangri-La Plaza’s “Sun Up to Showdown” spring/ summer 2018 fashion show last May 5 at the Grand Atrium, where 21 of the mall’s brands highlighted the hottest trends of the season.

Stripes both nautical and not were big, shown by everyone from Rustan’s Department Store, Joe Fresh, Gap and Penshoppe to Memo, Mothercare, Regatta, For Me and Calvin Klein Jeans.

Floral and tropical prints was another top trend, and not just for girls either but also for boys, as seen in Oxygen’s and Folded & Hung’s shirts. A super-pretty version of the trend was the floral appliqués on little girls’ dresses at Great Kids, Sky Castle, Gap, Rustan’s, and For Me.

Some brands combined both trends in one piece, like the striped floral shorts at Just G.

Plaid and checks are also in, seen on little-girl tops at Mothercare and a more grownup checkered dress at Onitsuka Tiger. For boys, shirts were checkered at Gap and pants also bore squares at Onitsuka Tiger.

A more feminine trend was ruffles, fluttering on dresses, skirts and tops at Rustan’s, Just G. and The Park, where they paired a sleeveless ruffled top with ruffled skirt, while Sky Castle had ruffled flamenco pants.

In the same stores, sexy off-theshoulder and cold-shoulder looks are still in, with Gingersnaps presenting a younger version of the look in an off-shoulder floral dress for little girls.

Once the weather turns cooler layering will be a thing, with boyfriend shirts tied at the waist over tanks or tees, as seen at Gap, Joe Fresh and The Park.

Tied in with this trend is the Athleisure look, with “varsity” jackets and hoodies perfect for layering at Onitsuka Tiger, For Me and Superdry, where a camo jacket was worn over drawstring pants.

Another girly trend was eyelet embroidery on pristine white pieces at Just G. and Zara, while a unisex trend was color blocking at brands like Memo, Periwinkle, Oxygen and Zara, where shorts came in primary colors like red, or softer sorbet hues like watermelon.

More unisex trends included top-to-toe denim: both jacket and pants at Calvin Klein Jeans, ripped or wide-legged jeans at Penshoppe, chambray shirts at Joe Fresh and Gingersnaps, patched and striped denim at True Religion, and jackets and shorts at Folded & Hung.

Rope belts are novel nautical accessories for him and her, as seen at Joe Fresh and The Park.

Speaking of boys’ accessories, the “murse” or waist bag was worn as a cross-body bag at Penshoppe and Onitsuka Tiger, while utility belts were big at Mothercare.
