DOJ chief backs firearms for fiscals
Following the recent killing of a deputy prosecutor, Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Menardo Guevarra said yesterday he supports the move for state prosecutors to arm themselves.
“Yes, I will support prosecutors getting firearm for self-defense. I wish we could have bulletproof vehicles to boot but we have to live within our means, and just do our job well,” Guevarra said.
He added that they are unable to purchase bulletproof vests due to lack of funds.
“For now we can only wear the breastplate of righteousness and the full armor of God,” Guevarra said.
Guevarra issued the statement after former Integrated Bar of the Philippines commissioner and now 1-Ang Edukasyon party-list Rep. Salvador Belaro Jr. called on the DOJ to procure and issue bulletproof vests and other protective gear to prosecutors who handling sensitive cases.
Last May 18, Quezon City Deputy Prosecutor Rogelio Velasco was killed in an ambush while he was on his way to pick up his wife from work.
He is the seventh prosecutor killed during the term of President Duterte.
