DOJ chief backs firearms for fis­cals

Fol­low­ing the re­cent killing of a deputy pros­e­cu­tor, Depart­ment of Jus­tice (DOJ) Sec­re­tary Me­nardo Gue­varra said yes­ter­day he sup­ports the move for state pros­e­cu­tors to arm them­selves.

“Yes, I will sup­port pros­e­cu­tors get­ting firearm for self-de­fense. I wish we could have bul­let­proof ve­hi­cles to boot but we have to live within our means, and just do our job well,” Gue­varra said.

He added that they are un­able to pur­chase bul­let­proof vests due to lack of funds.

“For now we can only wear the breast­plate of right­eous­ness and the full ar­mor of God,” Gue­varra said.

Gue­varra is­sued the state­ment af­ter for­mer In­te­grated Bar of the Philip­pines com­mis­sioner and now 1-Ang Edukasyon party-list Rep. Sal­vador Be­laro Jr. called on the DOJ to pro­cure and is­sue bul­let­proof vests and other pro­tec­tive gear to pros­e­cu­tors who han­dling sen­si­tive cases.

Last May 18, Que­zon City Deputy Pros­e­cu­tor Ro­ge­lio Ve­lasco was killed in an am­bush while he was on his way to pick up his wife from work.

He is the sev­enth pros­e­cu­tor killed dur­ing the term of Pres­i­dent Duterte.
