Phl, Russia reaffirm need for stronger defense ties

- By ALEXIS ROMERO

The Philippines and Russia have reaffirmed the need to strengthen their defense ties and work together against terrorism, illegal drugs and other threats.

Strengthening defense cooperation was discussed during the meeting of National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. and Security Council of the Russian Federation (SCRF) Secretary Nikolay Patrushev in Moscow yesterday.

The two officials said the Philippines-Russia security relations are “on the right track” following the conclusion of key framework agreements on security, defense, military-technical, law enforcement and legal cooperation last year.

“Our security relations have indeed grown since President Rodrigo Roa Duterte decided to elevate Russia to become one of our important bilateral partners. Much has been achieved in the past two years, but there is still so much room for growth,” Esperon said in a statement.

“We see more avenues for enhanced security cooperation between our military and law enforcement agencies,” he added.

During the second consultations between the Philippines’ National Security Council (NSC) and the SCRF, the two countries reaffirmed their mutual interest in strengthening cooperation in the fight against threats like international terrorism, drug trafficking, transnational crime and cyber crimes.

“They committed to pursue regular dialogue at the senior official and technical level, information and database-sharing, as well as training and other capacity-building activities. They likewise exchanged views on regional and international issues,” a statement issued by the NSC said.

The first NSC-SCRF consultations were held in Davao City from Feb. 15 to 17 last year.

Esperon said the Philippines is interested in looking at Russian defense technologies for its security agencies.

“Russia is known for its high quality yet relatively affordable equipment. It can be a reliable partner in this regard,” Esperon said.
