SM recycles 1.49M kg in responsible waste management program
SM Supermalls continues to make headway in its environmental and sustainability advocacy as it has recycled some 1.49 million kilograms of waste in 2017 alone.
During the recent visit of the 2018 Ms. Philippines Earth candidates at the different SM malls in Metro Manila as part of their environmental promotion, they participated in SM’s Trash to Cash project which invites the public to recycle their trash into cash.
Launched in 2007, The Trash to Cash project is one of SM’s environmental initiatives that promotes recycling and responsible solid waste management in communities where an SM Mall is present.
The project is held simultaneously in all 68 malls every first Friday and Saturday of the month, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is invited to exchange their scrap papers and cardboards, plastic and PET bottles, tin and aluminum cans, wooden furniture, metal cookware, and kitchen items for cash.
For 2017 alone, SM Supermalls have recycled 19,558 kilograms of paper.
Customers will just have to make sure all trash are prewashed or clean prior to the exchange.
Ms. Philippines Earth candidates went to SM City North Edsa, SM City Marikina and SM City Sta. Mesa and participated in the exchange of trash for cash with customers. The 2018 Ms. Earth Philippines is supported by SM Markets, comprised of SM Supermarket, SM Hypermar- ket and Savemore Market – the pioneering group behind the first reusable shopping bag in the Philippines, the SM Greenbag.
“We, at SM, endeavor to involve our employees and the communities where our malls are located, as part our community engagement program so that the people themselves become the catalysts for change in their own way,” Liza Silerio, SM Cares Program director for environment said.
SM Cares is the CSR arm of SM Prime Holdings. Its advocacies include programs on persons with disabilities, children and youth, women and breastfeeding mothers, environment sustainability, senior citizens, and overseas Filipino workers (SM Global Pinoy).
As a responsible mall developer, SM ensures that its CSR programs serve as catalyst for positive change for the community.
