Ombudsman prosecutor’s killer charged
Charges of robbery with homicide have been filed against the suspect in the killing of Assistant State Prosecutor Madonna Joy Tanyag before the Quezon City prosecutor’s office.
Assistant City Prosecutor Nilda Ordono recommended the filing of non-bailable charges against Angelito Avenido Jr., 31, a jeepney barker.
Avenido underwent inquest proceedings yesterday for the crime.
Quezon City Police District director Chief Superintendent Joselito Esquivel said they considered the case solved following the arrest and filing of charges against the suspect.
Morales lauds PNP
Ombudsman Conchita CarpioMorales commended the Philippine National Police (PNP) for the immediate arrest of Avenido.
Morales attended the wake of Tanyag at St. Peter’s Memorial Chapel in Quezon City yesterday.
“The Office of the Ombudsman commends the PNP for its immediate resolution of the senseless killing of Tanyag,” she said in a statement.
Tanyag, who was five months pregnant with her second child, was killed by Avenido in her car parked along Visayas Avenue on Monday.
Avenido, who was allegedly high on drugs at the time, owned up to the killing.
Tanyag joined the Office of the Ombudsman in 2016 and was assigned as a member of the preliminary investigation panel probing graft complaints against public officials.
She was also part of the prosecution team handling graft and malversation cases at the Sandiganbayan in connection with the P900-million Malampaya fund scam.
Other cases handled by Tanyag were the supposedly anomalous construction of the P2.2-billion Makati City Hall Parking Building from 2007 to 2011 and the alleged anomalous procurement of hospital beds and sterilizers for the Ospital ng Makati in 2000 and 2001.
