The second Hidilyn Diaz Weightlifting Open Championships (HDWOC) promises to be even bigger than the first one that was staged last year.

The silver medalist in the 2016 Rio Olympics yesterday vowed to continue to promote the sport through the HDWOC, which is fully backed by the MVP Sports Foundation.

“I’m not doing this for myself but for the future of weightlifting in our country,” said Diaz during press launch at Crossfit Ortigas.

The event is set July 27-29 at the Meralco Fitness Center in Ortigas.

Last year’s event drew 130 entries, including Filipino weightlifters based in Guam, Hong Kong and the United States. This time, they expect more.

“We expect a surge in the number of participants that’s why from two days, the tournament will run three days this year,” said tournament director Cyrus Cruz.

Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella said the HDWOC will serve as a qualifying for the national team to the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

Puentevella also announced the staging of a developmental and technical weightlifting seminar on July 25-26, and invited representatives from the different schools, colleges and universities nationwide, and the various local governments.

Also gracing the press launch were MVP Sports Foundation executive director Patricia Hizon and weightlifting coach Tony Agustin.

Diaz aired her excitement over the tournament bearing her name, and said this is just part of the legacy she wants to leave behind.

“After the 2020 Olympics, I think I’m done competing. I have other plans in life like to continue my studies and have a family,” said the Olympic medalist.
