MLTV ESCORTS VIEWERS TO ZERO-WASTE LIFESTYLE, WORK SPACES, CAKE SHOP, AND OUTDOOR FURNITURE STORE
On the fifth episode of the Season 9 of Modern Living
TV, hosts Stephanie Zubiri-Crespi and Bianca Gonzalez-Intal enliven the week with impressive stories of living, working and eating — from acquainting themselves with a zero-waste lifestyle, to visiting coworking spaces in the Metro, trying a hands-on baking session, and being at awe with beautiful outdoor furniture pieces.
ZERO-WASTE LIFESTYLE
Travel photographer Kimi JuanCaja considers avoiding pollution and preventing the depletion of natural resources as the reasons why she embraces the zero-waste lifestyle. Living sustainably, Kimi uses a reusable water bottle and cutlery set that include wooden spoons, forks, knives, straws and chopsticks. Her bag is also made of paper, making it compostable and biodegradable.
“Living consciously, to me, is more of being mindful of your waste. It’s not producing waste or not sending waste on the landfills. It’s more of recycling, reusing, and definitely not throwing anything that can’t be composted,” Kimi explains. “If ever I do throw things away, it’s biodegradable so it all goes back to the earth.”
CO-WORKING SPACES IN THE METRO
Connecting to the young market, STKD Zeppelin is a co-working space in Pasig that is perfect for small companies, freelancers, entrepreneurs and students. With its coffee and far-out interiors, STKD Zeppelin provides a working environment that “fosters connections and relationship.”
The company is an offshoot of the StockedInc, a local clothing and lifestyle brand known by board sports enthusiasts. “With everything moving so fast digitally, we thought of having the work space here to kind of connect people with our brand, by showing them what we’ve accomplished for more than a decade — you’ll see surf boards and skateboards,” shares JV Borromeo, co-owner of STKD Zeppelin.
Reflecting the culture and energy of the Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Clock In is another co-working space that can be a meeting place of “passionate and creative minds.” Its common area is a wide space with high industrial-style ceilings and large paintings. Meanwhile, Clock In’s center is also designed with colorful cushioned seats that are placed with circular tables. One of the best features of this co-working space is its digital library displaying miniatures of the city’s famous sculptures.
SWELL SWEET CAKES
To satisfy your sweet cravings, you may want to visit Gel Colet’s Swell Sweets Cake Lab in BGC. With its savory desserts, this cake shop also holds decorating and baking classes for kids during summer, even workshops for adults. “One of the main reasons why I wanted to have a shop was to be able do my workshop with kids. I felt like it would be more exciting if they did it in a place that looked like a real kitchen,” Gel says.
While working in TV production, Gel also delivers customized cakes for any occasion. Her Swell Sweet Cakes Lab started as a home-based online business in 2010. “When I was a researcher, I produced a segment on a home-baker. So after producing that segment, I kind of decided to have my own. I said, ‘Oh my gosh! It’s so interesting,’” Gel shares.
OUTDOOR FURNITURE FROM PICANTI
Through Picanti, an outdoor furniture store in Makati, designing your dream garden can now be like child’s play. This store is a good provider of decorative materials that are made of special composite stones. Specializing in indoor and outdoor furniture since 1990, Picanti offers architectural moldings that look like stone, which they call Aerostone. The brand also boasts the durability and lightness of their products.
“Although they are light, they are durable. That’s one good thing or the best feature that we have for our pieces because they may be exposed to extreme temperatures: cold, extreme cold, or extreme hot. But they’re still the same. No change in the texture, the finish and all,” says Evelyn Vedasto, managing director of Picanti.
