Smooth, shiny, voluminous hair is the standard women strive for when it comes to their crowning glory. But to achieve that effortless style, it takes more than just simple heat and drying. Over the course of five years, more than 100 Dyson engineers studied 1,010 miles of hair in laboratories to understand the composition of hu‑ man hair — from the cortex to the cuticle, root to tip — and how it reacts under the stresses of drying, brushing, coloring and the like.
And what they discovered was that there was, indeed, an optimal set of conditions needed to achieve beautiful volume and shine, while protecting your hair from heat damage.
Dyson design engineers found that effective drying requires a combi‑ nation of heat and air, and this led to the invention of the Dyson Digital Motor V9, which dries hair fast without exposing it to extreme damage. This complemented the existing sophisticated technology of the Air Multiplier, which delivers powerful airflow and controlled heat.

The Dyson Digital Motor V9 maximizes Air Multiplier technology by projecting a jet of high-velocity air, angled at 20°. In addition, 13 impeller blades generate 3.5kPa (kilopascals) of pressure and propel 13 liters of air up to the amplifier every second. This entrains surrounding air, multiply‑ ing the airflow threefold, whilst keeping the jet smooth and controlled.
Even when spinning at 110,000 revolutions per minute, heat is con‑ trolled thanks to thermal sensors that measure the exit flow temperature 20 times per second. This data is collated and transmitted to the machine’s microprocessor, which intelligently keeps the temperatures at below 150°C, optimal for drying hair.
