In 1934, Edades invited fellow artists Galo Ocampo and Carlos “Botong” Francisco to collaborate with him on a mural for the lobby of the capital theater in Escolta, Manila. This led to several collaborative projects and the growth of mural painting in the Philippines. Considered the pioneers of modern art in the Philippines, they eventually formed a group known as the Triumvirate of Modern Art, and later the Thirteen Moderns.

Edades received many awards for his contribution to Philippine Art: the Pro Patria Award given during the Rizal Centennial Celebration in 1961; and the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award from the City of Manila in 1964. In 1976, Edades was named National Artist for Painting.

On March 7, 1985, Edades passed away in Davao, leaving behind a priceless legacy in Philippine Modern Art.
