7 dead, 3 missing from rains, floods

A total of seven people perished and three others went missing in the aftermath of the heavy monsoon rains that inundated most parts of Luzon over the weekend.

Two babies left unattended by their parents in their houses drowned when the infants fell into the flood in separate incidents in Calumpit and Malolos in Bulacan on Monday. Acting provincial police director Senior Supt. Chito Bersaluna said one-year-old Regeilla May Tanding was left alone on the terrace of their house in Barangay Frances, Calumpit town when she fell

and drowned in three feet of floodwater.

Six-month-old Jerems Earl Nalaunan was sleeping with his mother when he fell in their flooded house in Barangay Bagna in Malolos City.

The two infants added to the five people initially reported to have drowned during the heavy monsoon rains over the weekend.

A 19-year-old boy drowned after he was swept away at a river in San Gabriel, La Union on Monday. Authoritie­s identified the victim as Mark Jake Subido.

In Tuguegarao City in Cagayan, 51-year-old Salvador Lapic drowned after he was swept away by strong river currents last Monday.

Two constructi­on workers, Romeo Martinez and Roberto Resco, drowned after they were swept by the current of Bustos River in Bulacan, also on Monday.

A seaman working as oiler in an inter-island vessel who went missing at the height of the heavy monsoon rains last Sunday was found dead near Baseco compound in Port Area, Manila yesterday.

Police initially identified the victim as RJ Masuecos, oiler of MV/Kristen Marie III.

Police said Masuecos and Rocky Seminiano had just finished lunch at the Baseco market and were walking along the breakwater when big waves hit them.

Seminiano said he managed to swim ashore but the victim never surfaced.

Kenneth Villarte, a 24-year-old hardware supply helper in Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan, went missing after going to the river for a swim.

Two persons were missing, one buried by landslide and the other carried by strong currents during the heavy downpour in Mankayan and Tuba, Benguet last Monday.

Police said barangay secretary Luvina Kidkid was with her villagers clearing their foot path in the mountains of Bedbed, Mankayan when the slope gave way, burying her in mud.

Krystel Marlin lost her balance and fell into a box culvert in Tuba, Benguet last Monday.

Officials launched a search and rescue operation for Marlin, who remains missing.
