Freeway goes abstract with Jose Joya collection
Since 2009, Freeway has produced a bi annual special collection featuring the works of our National Artists. With their National Artist Collector’s Series, the brand pays tribute to Philippine art, bringing awareness and accessibility to our culture’s masterpieces. Freeway continues to perpetuate the essence of expression with their new collection by showcasing the art of Jose Joya.
A painter and multimedia artist, Jose Joya pioneered the visual art of abstract expressionism during the Philippine era of realism. Expressing authentic Filipino abstractionism with the colors of Philippine landscape and visual elements of spontaneity and kinetic energy, Joya defined a new epoch for Philippine art. With it, he was hailed the National Artist for Visual Arts in 2003.
With Freeway’s new collection, Joya’s signature elements of abstract expressionism are expressed as clothing details and prints in jersey shirts, kneelength vests, loose blouses and modern bottoms. Transcending fashion into art, Freeway’s new collection highlights Joya’s visual aesthetic: open, ankle-length vests covered with expressionist strokes, colors of the Philippine landscape in batwing blouses and abstract shapes printed in a pencil skirt. Joya’s captivating visual aesthetic transforms these pieces into moving wearable art.
