Mapúa to host int’l sustainable environmental technologies meet

Mapúa University will be hosting the International Conference on Sustainable Environmental Technologies (ICSET) 2018 at its Intramuros, Manila, campus this coming Aug. 19 to 21.

Researchers and educators from various higher institutions around the globe will participate in the three-day event.

First held in 2003 as the Asian Pacific Regional Conference (APRC), the convention was internationalized in 2011 and has become a platform for research discourse wherein participating universities tackle, develop, and revolutionize the use of different technologies toward a livable and sustainable planet.

Mapúa University, Chia Nan University of Pharmacy, and Science and National Cheng Kung University of Taiwan are the organizers of the 2018 conference with the theme, “Innovation and Technopreneurship for Sustainable Environment and Development.”

“This generation is confronted by the growing problems and concerns on environmental exploitations. What has been besetting the planet in the past has gone up at a very alarming rate at present,” said Reynaldo Vea, president of Mapúa University.

“With the advent of new technologies and the bright minds of today’s decisionmakers, we can reduce significantly the struggle by maximizing our resources to provide new solutions to old problems, through safe and sustainable developments and innovations that will achieve both business and social objectives,” he added.

The ICSET elevates the research, development and innovation (RDI) capability not only of Mapúa but the Philippines as a whole. One product of the international convention is the Taiwan-Philippines Joint Water Quality Research and Innovation Center (TPWQRIC) located at Mapúa’s Yuchengco Innovation Center, which is jointly funded by Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology, Mapúa University, and National Cheng Kung University.

“The research focuses on water quality detection, point and system monitoring, pollution prevention, water treatment, and other related research areas that would result to environmental sustainability and sustainable development,” explained Delia Senoro, director of Mapúa’s Office of International Linkages for Research and Development.

This year’s scientific convention is sponsored by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) with an additional contribution from the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST- PCIEERD) and Maynilad Water Services Inc.

Participating international journals in the ICSET 2018 are Sustainable Environment Research, Taiwan Water Conservancy, Environments, Paddy and Water Environment, and Journal of Environmental Science and Management (JESAM).

These are indexed by Scopus and the Web of Science group. Full researches presented in the conference will be published in these journals after the necessary series of reviews and improvements.

“Local and international agencies and institutions have partnered with Mapúa’s RDI group,” Senoro said.

A significant increase on the University’s scientific research publications is also expected.

Mapúa University’s participation in the conference is part of its efforts to advance its Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) capabilities to global levels.
