Miriam College middle school and high school students win international competitions
Just four years since its founding, the Miriam College Middle School Chorus (MCMS Chorus) is making its voice heard loud and clear after winning gold and silver prize awards in the Folklore and Children’s Choir categories at the 1st Tokyo International Choir Competition (TICC) held in Harumi in Tokyo, Japan from July 27 to 29. They also won the Audience Choice Award for the Folklore Category, besting 59 other local and international choirs.
The winning pieces are Ili-ili Tulog Anay (Visayan Lullaby) arranged exclusively for MCMS Chorus by C.B.C. Moral and Andardi (Tagbanua Folksong) arranged by A. Arippudin. The 30-member, all-girls MCMS Chorus was accompanied by conductor and musical director Sinamar Respicio and its founder and artistic director Jhames Labrador. Previously the group won silver awards for both Equal Voices and Folklore categories at the 10th Orientale Concentus International Choral Competition in Singapore and second prize at the 2017 National Competitions for Young Artists.
Meanwhile, the Miriam College High School dance troupe, Sayawatha, bagged second place at the World of Dance finals held on July 29 at the Pasadena Convention Center in California, USA.
Sayawatha was declared champion at the World of Dance Philippines competition last March, qualifying them to represent the country in the international finals junior division where they danced against 21 teams from around the world.
