Heart health a priority at De Los Santos Medical Center
Cardiovascular disease or CVD (disorders of the heart and blood vessels) remains the leading cause of death both in the Philippines and around the world. The most common CVD is coronary artery disease or heart disease. In the country, nearly 276 people die from a heart attack every day. It has become increasingly important for Filipinos to invest in their heart health.
There are several risk factors for heart disease including smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and uncontrolled blood pressure, or diabetes among others. Early warning signs can include shortness of breath and chest pain. When these symptoms appear it is important to see a cardiologist to properly and quickly assess potential heart disease through clinical evaluation and the required diagnostic procedures.
“A coronary angiogram, or heart screening test, is the ‘gold standard’ when it comes to identifying the location and severity of potential coronary artery blockages,” explains cardiologist and De Los Santos Medical Center Catheterization Laboratory Unit head Dr. Danilo Santos. “This test can accurately evaluate the presence of heart disease. If the patient has narrowed or blocked arteries, these can be addressed via medication, surgery, or a non-surgical procedure known as coronary angioplasty. For patients who suffer from life-threatening arrhythmia, pacemaker insertion is also available to ensure that heart rhythms are normalized.”
De Los Santos Medical Center (DLSMC), a subsidiary of Manuel V. Pangilinan’s MVP Group of Companies under the Metro Pacific Hospital Holdings Inc. (MPHHI) banner, understands the importance of protecting Filipino hearts and providing affordable treatment options. To help give more Filipinos access to cardiovascular diagnosis and treatments the hospital launched their Catheterization Laboratory Unit with the latest technology and experienced cardiologists providing complete and affordable packages for coronary angiogram, coronary angioplasty, and pacemaker insertion.
In addition to these services, the DLSMC Cath Lab also offers interventional procedures for pediatric and adult congenital and structural heart diseases like PDA, ASD and VSD device closure, as well as several other Interventional Radiology procedures such as Intracranial Aneurysm Coiling and Dialysis Access Management, to name a few. The lab strives to provide the best minimally invasive image-guided diagnostics and treatment at cost-effective rates.
“We believe that quality heart care and interventional radiology need not be expensive. By offering these new services at affordable rates, we hope to help reduce the number of Filipino fatalities due to heart disease and improve the quality of life of our countrymen,” Raul Pagdanganan, president and CEO of DLSMC.
