Cignal upends Generika-Ayala

Cignal outlasted GenerikaAy­ala in a thrilling five-set encounter, 26-24, 17-25, 2522, 20-25, 17-15, to secure its second win in four outings in the Philippine Superliga All Filipino Conference yesterday at Alonte Sports Center in Biñan City.

Showing steely nerves in a cardiac finish, the HD Spikers saved two match points through the efforts of skipper Rachel Anne Daquis then got on the hill on an attack error by Generika’s Bang Pineda and didn’t waste the opportunit­y to seal it with a double block.

Mylene Paat came through with 23 attacks and five blocks while Jheck Dionela had 31 excellent digs as the HD Spikers got back on track after their emotional loss to Foton last Wednesday.

The Life Savers slipped to their third consecutiv­e setback.

Defending champion Petron got the better of F2 Logistics in their rivalry match, recovering from a first set meltdown to win in four, 22-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-20, and take pole position with 4-0.

The Cargo Movers absorbed their first loss after three straight wins.

In the Superliga’s inaugural Collegiate Grand Slam also at the Alonte Sports Center, University of the Philippine­s survived a tough challenge from Colegio San Agustin-Biñan, 25-6, 21-25, 25-16, 25-22, to secure its second straight win.

Far Eastern debuted with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-11 win over De la Salle-Dasmariñas.
