Lady Altas oust Stags, stay in contention
Perpetual Help eliminated San Sebastian, 25-19, 25-8, 18-25, 25-17, yesterday to keep its Final Four bid alive in the women’s division of the 94th NCAA volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
Jowie Verzosa came through with 15 points and 13 digs while Cindy Imbo and Jenny Gaviola scattered 12 hits each as the Lady Altas nailed their fifth victory against three defeats and a spot in the Final Four.
The Las Piñas-based spikers, who missed the Final Four last year, could secure a berth if they beat the Jose Rizal U Lady Bombers (4-4) in the final elimination round playdate on Thursday.
Perpetual Help also booted SSC (4-5) out of the Final Four.
Earlier, Perpetual Help’s men’s and juniors’ squads dumped their respective foes to inch closer to sweeping their way straight to the best-of-three finals.
The Altas waylaid the Stags, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21, while the Junior Altas walloped the Staglets, 25-15, 25-23, 25-17, to roll to their eighth straight win.
They play JRU on Thursday to claim an outright finals spot.
Reigning MVP Joebert Almodiel was the Altas’ driving force again as he unloaded a game-high 18 points while Ronniel Rosales and Aljoe Serena contributed 11 and 10, respectively.
Perpetual Help also swept the men’s side last season.
