MRT-3 clarifies liquids ban

- – Robertzon Ramirez

The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) clarified last night its ban on liquids at all of its train stations.

The rail line, an attached agency of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), said in a statement it “is seeking a deeper understanding from the riding public as the agency is strictly implementing a more effective security regulation.”

The MRT-3 received flak after security personnel confiscated not only bottled beverages but all items containing liquids such as perfume, rubbing alcohol and lotion from commuters.

The MRT-3 said some items may be permitted upon validation and approval by police officers or its security personnel.

Among these items are baby formula, breast milk or drinking water if the passenger is travelling with a baby or small child.

Also permitted are all prescription and over-the-counter medications as well as liquids including water, juice, liquid nutrition or gels for passengers with a disability or medical condition.

The rail line also allowed life-support and life-sustaining liquids such as bone marrow, blood products and organs for transplant; items used to augment the body for medical and cosmetic reasons such as mastectomy products, prosthetic breasts, bras or shells containing gels, saline solution or other liquids.

Gels, frozen liquids or medical-related items used for cooling persons with disabilities or medical conditions are also permitted.

National Capital Region Police Office chief Director Guillermo Eleazar said the Philippine National Police asked the DOTr to impose security measures following the bombings in Mindanao.

Eleazar stressed that agencies have the right to set their own guidelines.
