Under the National Tourism Development Plan, the government aims to attract 12 million in tourist arrivals and reach 100 million domestice travelers by 2022. The government also aims to generate $71.80 billion in tourism revenues.
PHILIPPINES AS A TOP TOURIST DESTINATION
According to the 2018 World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Power and Performance Report, the Philippines ranked 13th among the top 15 tourism powerhouses that recorded absolute growth within the last seven years. The report highlights the scale of growth of a country’s travel and tourism in four key areas – contribution to GDP, international visitor spend, domestic spend and capital investment.
In terms of international visitor spending, the country ranked 21st for posting a 3.7 percent increase in the last seven years. In 2017, WTTC said the country earned $7.5 billion. It also ranked 23rd among states with the fastest growing interntional visitor spend at 11.9 percent in visitor expoert growth per annum.
While in domestic travel and tourism spending, the Philippines landed in sixth place for last year’s $45.7 billion — an actual growth of $26.2 billion from 2011 to 2017, according to WTTC, making the country third among 185 states in terms of highest annual growth rate.
