Cold mornings until end of the month

(amihan) will continue to bring cold mornings in the country until the end of the month, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said yesterday.

“The amihan continues to prevail over the country. That’s why we still experience cold temperatures especially during early morning,” PAGASA senior weather forecaster Gener Quitlong said in an interview with dzMM.

“Amihan is likely to prevail until the end of the month.”

However, slightly warmer weather is expected in the afternoon as the dry season approaches, Quitlong said.

The coldest temperature recorded in Metro Manila so far this amihan season was 19 degrees Celsius last Feb. 7 and Jan. 17.

In Baguio City, the lowest recorded temperature so far was 9 degrees Celsius on Jan. 30.

Earlier, PAGASA’s climate monitoring and prediction section chief Ana Liza Solis said the northeast monsoon is unlikely to last until March as it reached its peak early January.

She said last year the coldest weather in the country was registered in Baguio City on March 11 at 11.2 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, no tropical cyclone is expected to affect the country in the next two to three days, according to Quitlong.

PAGASA’s latest climate outlook showed there is a slim chance of cyclone development in February.
