Fiery windup propels Superal back on top

-

CARMONA, Cavite – Princess Superal birdied the last four holes at the front for a 69 as she reclaimed the lead she squandered with a wavering backside start that enabled three Thais to crowd her for the crown in the Manila Southwoods Ladies Championship here yesterday.

After dominating the opener with a 64 Tuesday, Superal stumbled with a missed green bogey on No. 10 and though she rolled in a 20-footer for birdie on the 14th, she groped for form from there, dropping another stroke on No. 2.

She fell off the leader board as Thanutra Boonraksasat took advantage of an early tee start, overcoming a bogey on No. 2 with five birdies in the next seven holes. The Thai added two more at the back to finish with a 66 and wrest the lead at 10-under 134.

The fiery windup, however, shoved Superal back on top at 133 with Chonlada Chayanun (67135) joining the title chase in the P1.5 million event serving as the sixth leg of the 2018-19 Ladies Philippine Golf Tour circuit.

“I just couldn’t hit it good off the tee in the early going and some of my approach shots were off until I regained my touch and rhythm at the finish,” said Superal after bucking tough pin placements with birdies inside 10 feet from No. 6.

Multi-titled Yupaporn Kawinpakorn, meanwhile, made it a three-player threat for Thailand as the Pradera Verde leg winner last December birdied three of the last six holes at the front for a 69 to stay in the mix at 136.
