Megawide leads group putting up Maynilad’s biggest treatment plant

- By IRIS GONZALES

Megawide Corp., the listed engineering company, has partnered with the MUL consortium to construct Maynilad Water Services Inc.’s Las Piñas Water Reclamation Facility.

The project is the largest wastewater treatment plant of west zone concessionaire Maynilad. It will have a capacity of 88 million liters per day.

MUL consortium is comprised of Toshiba Water Solutions Ltd and LinkENERGIE.

Toshiba is an international environmental services company that specializes in wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal, while Filipino-owned company LinkENERGIE is one of the leading electromechanical contractors in the Philippines.

Megawide deputy head for construction Eric Tan said the project also marks the company’s first engineering project in wastewater treatment.

“Together with MUL, we are looking forward to delivering a first-world facility that meets the standards of Maynilad and benefits the greater community,” Tan said.

The new WRF would support the Supreme Court- mandated cleanup efforts for Manila Bay, said LinkENERGIE chief executive officer Francisco Matias.

“Once the Las Piñas WRF is operational, it will process raw sewage to conform to DENR standards of cleanliness. It will discharge only clean water into the river system that drains directly to Manila Bay,” he said.

The Las Piñas WRF will serve around 660,000 customers once completed in 2021.

The project is timely as a water supply shortage in the east zone of Metro Manila has put on the spotlight calls to develop new water sources as well as water saving measures and wastewater treatment projects.

On March 6, Ayala-owned east zone concessionaire Manila Water Co. experienced water service interruptions which were attributed to various factors such as the lack of policies on water and new water sources in Metro Manila aside from the decades-old Angat Dam. The situation has yet to fully return to normal.

Maynilad, the west zone concessionaire chaired by tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan, did not experience a water shortage, but has nevertheless stressed the need for new water sources.
