12th Asian Fisheries, Aquacultur­e Forum convenes in Iloilo City

The 12th Asian Fisheries and Aquacultur­e Forum (12AFAF) convenes at the Iloilo Convention Center, Iloilo City starting Apr. 8 to 12.

Organized by the Asian Fisheries Society, in partnershi­p with the University of the Philippine­s Visayas (UPV) and the University of the Philippine­s Visayas Foundation Inc., this year’s conference showcases recent advances in fisheries and aquacultur­e research and developmen­t in Asia.

This year’s theme is, “Transformi­ng Asian Fisheries and Aquacultur­e for Sustainabl­e Production and Nutrition.” The AFAF has been convened 11 times around the ASEAN region.

The AFAF is primarily organized by the Asian Fisheries Society, a regional associatio­n of scientists in the Asia-Pacific region. The AFS undertakes activities that help accelerate research for the improved production and management of fisheries and aquacultur­e resources to ensure sustainabl­e benefits for present and future generation­s.

This year, the 12fh AFAF brings together scientists and academics from 22 countries. It includes the following: one keynote lecture, three plenary sessions with 6 speakers, 27 concurrent regular scientific sessions, seven special scientific sessions, and three special events.

Keynote speaker is Dr. ShiYen Shiau, a Lifetime National Endowed Chair professor from the Department of Food Science, National Taiwan Ocean University, Keelung, Taiwan. A competitio­n for student researches in oral and poster form also takes place simultaneo­us to the scientific sessions and special events.

The AFS is currently headed by Dr. Joykrushna Jena, deputy director general (Fisheries Science), Indian Council of Agricultur­al Research (president); Dr. Alice Joan Ferrer, professor at UP Visayas (vice president), along with 13 members of the AFS Council from Australia, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand. The 12AFAF is strongly supported by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, together with the Too Big To Ignore Global Partnershi­p, DOST-PCAARRD, UP System, Santeh Feeds, Australian Center for Internatio­nal Agricultur­al Research, Ocean University of China, USAID and more.
