For the Sisons, creating art is a family affair
It’s not surprising that renowned portrait artist Ed Sion’s son Isaac would seriously pursue a career in art since he grew up surrounded by his father’ s tools. And while Ed is a masterful portrait painter, his son Isaac focuses on murals.
Ed credits the late publisher and philanthropist Betty Go-Belmonte for helping launch his career. Mrs. Belmonte chose his now-famous portrait of President Cory Aquino to be featured on the cover of the Fookien Times 1986-1987 issue. Sion was appointed official portrait artist during President Cory’s administration where his works were given as gifts to VIP guests by Malacañang. He has also done the official portraits of the Speakers of the House, which grace the walls of the Philippine Congress. Sion’s recent works feature newly elected Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, Sen. Manny Pacquiao, actress-politician Marjorie Baretto, Judge Antonio and Mrs. Conchita Natchura, and broadcast journalist Mel Tiangco, among others.
The elder Sion has broadened his style to include colored portraits in pastel and watercolor on paper
Ed’s son Isaac, a UP Diliman fine arts graduate, has been creating art in vast, public spaces. Among his noted works are collaborations with other artists that adorn the walls and pillars of the NAIA 3 building as well as a patriotic mural at the archives section of the Batasang Pambansa Complex. A mural he made of blue skies and white clouds adds a celestial touch to the home of Sorsogon Governor Chiz Escudero and Heart Evangelista. Isaac’s most recent work is an imposing 9’x6’ feet abstract painting that was commissioned by a new homeowner whose house was designed by Arch. Paul Pena.
