’Twas a cosmic blast

If you weren’t at The Axon in Green Sun, Makati last July 13, then let us tell you what went down. First off, Jim Bacarro from Cheats rated this year’s Satchmi Vinyl Day an 11/10 and said it was the best one yet. If that didn’t give you FOMO, then there’s more to come.

This was the sixth year Satchmi brought hugely discounted vinyl records and incredible local bands in one event. Together with Levi’s, they’ve made the venue feel astrological. With fairy lights above, star signs in the background, and birth charts on tables, there’s no doubt that the theme this year was “Vinylscope.” At one side, there were multiple

If you’d like to go beyond the digital experience and feel the music you’re listening to, vinyl is the way to go. Take it from Howard Luistro of Oh, Flamingo! After buying a 15-percent-off XTC album, he shared his love of vinyl. “I like that it’s raw. I like the physical ritual of looking for it, buying the album, and putting it in a record player. Listening to vinyl slows things down compared to listening to a digital playlist. I like listening to music directly na walang computer. Old form: it’s like how it was supposed to be listened to in that era.”

Meanwhile, host Candy Gamos kept the crowd pumped as she introduced each band according to (guess what?) their musical star sign, of course! The band We Are Imaginary is a Capricorn because of their strategic and reflective lyrics. Clara Benin’s music is a Taurus because it’s experimental and sensual at the same time. And naturally, Autotelic is an earth sign with its songs relating to stability and dependability. Other outof-this-world bands within the lineup were Jarlo Basé, Over October, Extrapolation, Kremesoda, I Belong to the Zoo, Dante & Amigo, Any Name’s Okay, Munimuni, Lola Amour, Reese Lansangan, Cheats, and Oh, Flamingo!

You could see that the whole crowd was composed of music lovers. They were all filled with passion for their favorite bands as they energetically responded to each set. When Munimuni asked if they could bring out their phones and turn on their flashlights, they did. When I Belong to the Zoo dedicated each hugot song to a heartbreaking scenario, the crowd went wild.

When Autotelic played, a moshpit was formed. They were even asked if they would play again next year and the band collectively said, “Yeah! Of course. Hindi kami hi-hindi. If we had our way, we would play every year. Sarap talaga

maging part ng Vinyl Day. Plus! Ganda ng setup ng stage.” Reese Lansangan also had a great set. “It’s super surreal that the audience sings along to every song because usually, they only sing the chorus. It’s fun. Sobrang nakaka-hype ‘yun as a performer,” she says. The bands were soaking up the audience’s energy, and they poured it right back. This is one of the reasons why Vinyl Day is one of the best gigs of the year. Aside from the fact that it’s free, there’s a special kind of magic to the connection that the crowd and bands have. They’re all just in it for the music. Should we RSVP you for next year?
