Sen. Pacquiao unites Filipinos

- – CHISSAN RAE BALDERAS

I grew up watching his fights on a delayed telecast since my lolo would always request to have us, his grandchildren, watch Pacquiao’s fight whenever he did. The only thing I was able to comprehend about boxing then was to throw punches to your opponent or knock him down as early as possible so you would win the match and take home an exaggeratedly large amount of money as the price.

Today, as I watch his fight for victory against Keith Thurman, I realized it was deeper than that. It was deeper than just putting up an amazing show for the people and bringing home the price. I can now understand why Sen. Pacquiao just can’t leave his boxing career amidst all criticisms thrown at him by his critics for simultaneously being a legislator and a living international boxing legend.

He just have so much pride to show to the world as a Filipino. I felt it. I felt it that he is now allowing himself to be hurt by Thurman’s punches because he knows he would somehow uplift the morale of the entire Filipino nation.

Aside from being a senator who makes laws for the well-being of Filipinos, he knows that entering the boxing arena and winning a match is also and always will be a way to unite Filipinos, wherever they may be in the world.

In the end, I arrived at the idea that possibly, if we all just do our own share of positivity each day by simply helping others smile or by having this discipline to follow our laws and regulations, then it would not take so much effort for our government to seek progress.

Why? Because we cooperate. We help one another. We do not just depend on our government to develop and succeed as a nation. I strongly believe now that if we all have our discipline and love for our nation instead of constantly throwing negatives and criticisms to President Duterte and his administration despite all the efforts we are seeing, then we may achieve progress and development faster than we could ever imagine and expect.

I express my gratitude to Sen. Manny for making me realize this thought. And thank you, Sen. Manny for the pride you just brought home to us. Congratulations to you and to every Filipino!
